Homework (Note--Some students have already completed their writing; hence, they are excused from this responsibility.  Thank you to those students.)  Teacher is helping to chaperon seniors on their senior trip; thus, a substitute teacher will assist and guide you.  It is expected that you abide by the rules and follow the planned agenda.

Modeled Sample Descriptive Paragraph

My Most Impressionable Memories in New York City

While living in New York City, have you ever noticed what is most impressionable?  By analyzing my art composition entitled, "The Empire State Building and New York City," one might ask, "Who is in the picture?"  My answer would be, 'In the picture you can see me on top of the Empire State Building, looking at the buildings and the city.'  Another person might ask, "What are the people doing?"  My answer would be, 'They are enjoying the views from the top of the Empire State Building.'  Somebody else might ask, "Where is that place?"  My answer would be, 'It is in the downtown-Manhattan.'  Still another person might ask, "When it it?"  And I would say, 'It is when I came to the US in the summer of 2010.'  And lastly, someone else might ask, "Why did you paint this picture as your most impressionable scene?"  And I would say, 'Because that was one of my dreams before I came to New York, and I remember really liking that place in my dreams.'

My Most Impressionable Memories in New York City

My most impressionable moments in New York City while living in New York, have been amazing.  What is most impressionable?  By analyzing my art composition entitled:  "Three places, home where I'm living right now, my place where I'm working, at Liberty High School, also the Empire State Building, and the Statue of Liberty, my favorite sculptures to look at in the city.  To add, the metro station is also so impressionable for me.  One might ask, "Who is in the picture?"  My answer would be, 'All of my friends, family, and another person who helps out a lot.'  Another person might ask, "What are the people doing?"  My answer would be, 'They are playing volleyball and soccer, and some of them are talking, and others are working.  Still, another person might ask, "Where is the place in New York?"  My answer would be, 'It is in an area in Greenpoint, near a park.  Yet still, another person might ask, "When is it?"  And I would say, 'It is happening in my life right now.'  Lastly, someone else might ask, "Why did you paint this picture as your most impressionable scene?"  I might say, 'I painted these places that remind me most of -----, and I was really happy over there.'

ESL ART -- Classes 2 and 5 -- Impressions of New York, Inspired by Faith Ringgold - April 12th

Impressionable Moments in New York City--Project inspired by Faith Ringgold's Tar Beach Series

HOTS:  Thinking about your time in NYC, what have you noticed that impresses you most?  Is it the buildings-- skyscrapers; is it the people--the diversity, is it the landmarks--like the Statue of Liberty and/or the Empire State Building?  Perhaps it is the moments and memories of being with your family in and around your building, in your neigbhorhood, and/or anywhere in New York -- as it was for Ringgold.  Along these lines, be prepared to add detail to your sketches and begin the design of your composition using your newly acquired skills in watercolor painting.

This link will show impressionable photos of NYC that may inspire you:

In your enlarged drawing, you must be able to ask and answer these interrogatives:

Who is in your picture?
What are they doing?
Where is it?
When is it?
Why is this your most impressionable time in NYC?

Did you know that there is also text on Ringgold's art?  Let's read below:
TAR BEACH--WOMAN ON A BRIDGE SERIES-PART I, BY FAITH RINGGOLD
"I will always remember when the stars fell down around me and lighted me up above the George Washington Bridge."
"Sleeping on Tar Beach was magical.  Laying on the roof in the night with stars and skyscraper buildings all around me made me feel rich, like I owned all that I could see.  The bridge was my most-prized possession."
"I could see our tiny roof tops with Mommy and Daddy and Mr. and Mrs. Honey, our next door neighbors, still playing cards as if nothing was going on, and Bebe, my baby brother, laying real still on the mattress just like I told him, with his eyes looking like huge flood-lights tracking me through the sky."
"Daddy said the George Washing Bridge was the longest and most beautiful bridge in the world and that it opened in 1931 on this very day I was born.  Daddy worked on the bridge hoisting cables.  Since then, I've wanted that bridge to be mine."
"Now, I have claimed it.  All I had to do was fly over it for it to be mine forever.  I can wear it like a giant diamond necklace, or just fly over it and marvel at its sparkling beauty.  I can fly, yes, fly.  Me, Cassie Louise Lightfoot, only eight years old and in the third grade and I can fly."
"That means I am free to go wherever I want to for the rest of my life.  Daddy took me to see the Union  Building he is working on.  He can walk on steel girders high up in the sky and not fall.  They call him the cat."
"But still, we can't join the Union because Grampa wasn't a member.  Well Daddy is going to own that building cause I'm gonna fly over it and give it to him.  Then, it won't matter that he's not in their Union or whether he's colored or a half breed Indian like they say."
"He'll be rich and won't have to stand on the 24 story high girders and look down.  He can look up at his building going up.  And Mommy won't cry all winter when Daddy goes to the work and doesn't come home until late at night.  And, Mommy can laugh and sleep and eat, just like Mrs. Honey.   And, we can have ice cream every night for dessert."
"Next, I'm going to fly over the ice cream factory just to make sure we do.  Tonight we're going up to Tar Beach.  Mommy is roasting peanuts and frying chicken and Daddy will bring home a watermelon.  Mr. and Mr. Honey will bring the drinks and their old green card table.  And then, the stars will fall around me and I will fly to the Union Building."
"I'll take Bebe with me.  He has threatened to tell Mommy and Daddy if I leave him behind.  I have told him it's very easy, and anyone can fly.  All you need is some where to go that you can't get to any other way.  The next thing you know, your're flying among the stars."

End

Directions:  Analyze Ringgold's Tar Beach 2 text written on her art work by answering questions below:
(Use line paper to answer)
1.  What is the name of the bridge?
2.  What is the protagonist's name?
3.  What her brother's name?
4.  What is the name of the bridge?
5.  Who are the adults in the picture?
6.  Why did the protagonist like to look at the stars?
7.  Where did her father work?
8.  Why was this job dangerous?
9.  Why did the protagonist dream of flying?
10.  Why did the protagonist say, "All you need is some where to go that you can't get to any other way.  The next thing you know, your're flying among the stars."
